Life

After graduating from high school, Larsen studied physical exercise at San Diego State University (Bachelor 1961). As an active player, he was often injured so that he could not meet his expectations. After the exam, he hitchhiked around Europe to sit in with the various trainers. Back in California, he began as the coach of Monte Vista High School , with which he remained unbeaten as a team for three years and won the league four times. With that he rose and became a trainer at the Grossmont Community College in El Cajon . In his 12 years his teams won nine league championships and set 11 American junior college records. He also put on a club team, the Jamul Toads , with whom he won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Cross Country in 1976 . This was his entry to become an assistant coach at UCLA in 1979 . He was extremely successful with the long distance athletes, so that in 1984, when his boss Jim Bush retired, he could become his successor. In his 20 years at UCLA, 13 of his athletes have won 25 national championships. He was able to achieve 118-3-1 victories with his team against difficult opponents in the comparative matches and was PAC-10 Coach of the Year nine times . He was the endurance coach of the American Olympic team in 2004. Meb Keflezighi , who he trained , won the silver medal in the marathon and in 2009 he won the New York City Marathon . He was NCAA Track and field coach of the year three times (1987, 1988, 1995) and once for Cross Country (1980). About Larsen there is the documentary (2014) City Slickers Can't Stay with Me: The Bob Larsen Story. After his retirement from UCLA, he and others founded the Californian high altitude training camp on Lake Mammoth , the Mammoth Track Club (at an altitude of 2,400 m). Here he still trains the American elite of long distance runners to this day.
