Thompson started in Vernon in December 2009 for the first time in the Nor-Am Cup and finished 81st in the sprint and 56th in the 15 km freestyle. In January 2014, he took his first Nor-Am Cup victory in the Canmore sprint . In the 2014/15 season he finished in the top ten 12 times in the Nor Am Cup, including third place in the sprint in Duntroon and second place in the sprint in Vernon and thus reached fourth place in the overall standings. In the following season he took three wins and a second place in the Nor-Am Cup and thus achieved fourth place in the overall standings, as in the previous year. He ran his first World Cup race at the beginning of March 2016 at the Ski Tour Canada , which he ended prematurely and took 52nd place in the sprint stage in Gatineau . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he came in 81st place in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer . In March 2017 he got his first World Cup point at the World Cup final in Quebec with 30th place in the sprint. In the 2017/18 season he came in sixth place in the overall standings of the Nor-Am Cup with ten top ten placements, including three third places and one first place.
The following season, Thompson won the sprint and the 30 km mass start race at Canmore . In addition, he achieved third place over 10 km classic at the Canadian championships in Gatineau and finally reached tenth place in the overall standings of the Nor-Am Cup.
