geology

Bodega Head (in the top left of the map) is west of the small coastal town of Bodega Bay

Bodega Head is right on the western side of the San Andreas Fault , which runs between the foothills and the mainland . During the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 , the promontory shifted about 5 m and shifted the port north towards the mainland.

Geologically , there are different rocks on Bodega Head, from those on the mainland to those to the east. While the rocks at Bodega Head are granite , the mainland rocks are of oceanic origin from the Franciscan Complex . The Bodega Head is the northern tip of a vast geological province called the Salinian Block , the core of which is of the same origin as the core of the Sierra Nevada Mountains . The block tore off the continent when the San Andreas Fault formed 20 million years ago and was transported hundreds of kilometers north. Other nearby examples of the Salinian Block are the Point Reyes Peninsula and the Farallon Islands .

A controversial attempt by Pacific Gas and Electric to build a nuclear power plant on the peninsula in the late 1950s failed because of environmental protection and the potential risk of earthquakes .
