Maltese Commandery

The ground monument Johanniter / Malteser Kommende / Ballei Herrenstrunden is located in the Herrenstrunden district of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

history

A courtyard at the Strundequelle came at the end of the 13th century in the possession of the Order of St. John . The plant was then further expanded to become a coming one . In 1328 the now enlarged Maltese commandery Herrenstrunden was raised to the status of a ballot for the Lower Rhine and Westphalian areas of the order. More buildings and a first church were added by 1374. Several stables and barns were destroyed by fire at the end of the 16th century. They were later rebuilt. From 1530 ownership passed to the Order of Malta . In the middle of the 17th century, the commandery building was renewed and the surrounding pond was rebuilt.

A decisive change took place with the dissolution of the order during the secularization of 1802/03 through the sale of the coming. For the construction of the L286 road from Bergisch Gladbach to Kürten , the area was cut into two parts in 1848/49, several farm buildings were laid down, individual trenches were buried and parts of the fore and main castle of Zweiffel Castle were built over.

description

Of the former two-part complex, only the building of the Maltese Commandery exists today in its floor plan from the 17th century. All other buildings and economic facilities from the Middle Ages were built over or fell into desolation and were covered with earth. So far there have been no archaeological excavations. According to scientific experience, however, it can be assumed that remains of previous buildings have been preserved in the ground. This also applies to the part of the landscape that was later laid down when the country road was built. It is then to be expected that the remains of older buildings and expansion phases of the commandery have been preserved in the ground. This can be, for example, wall remains, foundations, pits, running horizons, wells and other finds.

Ground monument

In addition to the Commandery, according to the current state of knowledge, the remains of buildings and the buried moat that have been preserved in the ground are of particular importance in terms of monument preservation. The entire area of the original Maltese Commandery was therefore entered under No. 18 in the list of monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
