Bogalhal was the seat of an independent community ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Pinhel . 37 residents live in the former municipality (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal in 2013 , the municipality of Bogalhal was dissolved on September 29, 2013 and merged with the municipality of Valbom to form the new municipality of Valbom / Bogalhal . The seat of the new municipality was Valbom.
