Bogdan Popović

Bogdan Popović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Богдан Поповић ; * December 20, 1863 July / January 1,  1864 greg. In Belgrade ; † November 7, 1944 in Belgrade) was a Serbian literary scholar .

Life

Popović studied first in Belgrade and then in Paris at the Sorbonne . In 1893 he became professor of literary history at Velika Skola and from 1905 taught comparative literature at the University of Belgrade . He showed the young generation of Serbian poets the way out of national constriction towards western aesthetic values. Popović also translated from French and in 1901 founded the Serbian literary magazine Srpski knijzevni glasnik, the most influential for decades .

One of his students was Jovan Skerlić .
