Bogside 69
The sculpture Bogside '69 in Hanover was created by the sculptor Hans-Jürgen Breuste on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Amnesty International in 1981. It is located on Osterstrasse in the Mitte district .
history
Hans-Jürgen Breuste obtained the raw material for the granite fist caught in iron bands from a quarry , in which the National Socialist sculptor Arno Breker and his students had previously worked on large ideological sculptures. Breuste combined his historical find with his own artistic work in such a way that the viewer - even without knowing the origin of Faust - associatively feel the connection to the goals and ideals of Amnesty International. With his sculpture, the artist linked the human rights organization , political violence under National Socialism and the violations of civil rights in the Northern Ireland conflict in the Bogside 1969 - to which the sculpture's title refers - to create a global space of association on the subject.
The sculpture was first erected in 1981 and found its current location in 1989.
