Bohumil Bydžovský

Bohumil Bydžovský (born March 14, 1880 in Duchcov , † May 6, 1969 in Jindřichův Hradec ) was a Czech mathematician. He dealt mainly with algebraic geometry and algebra.

Bydzovsky graduated from the Academic Gymnasium in Prague in 1898 and then studied mathematics and physics at Charles University in Prague , where Eduard Weyr was his teacher. Under his influence, he turned to geometry and received his doctorate in 1903. Then he was a teacher, including 1907 to 1910 at the Prague Karlin secondary school (with the title of professor). In 1909 he completed his habilitation and gave lectures at the Polytechnic in Prague and in 1911 also qualified as an engineer. In 1917 he became adjunct professor at the University of Prague, where he received a full professorship in 1920. In 1930/31 he was dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which had previously split off from the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1946 he became rector of the university. In 1949 he became chairman of the Czechoslovak Research Council.

He wrote college textbooks on analytical geometry and linear algebra (matrices, determinants) and textbooks on arithmetic. Bydzovsky dealt with infinite groups, theory of matrices and determinants, and geometric configurations. He also dealt with the history of geometry and mathematics education in schools.

In 1919 he became a corresponding and in 1929 full member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts and in 1952 one of the first full members of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The asteroid of the main outer belt (2661) Bydžovský is named after him.
