Bohumil Říha

Bohumil Říha (born February 27, 1907 in Vyšetice , † December 15, 1987 in Prague ) was a Czech novelist and children's book author .

Life

One of his most famous works was his children's lexicon from 1959. For "Jindra and the Baroness" he received a special prize from the Czech Ministry of Culture in 1960. His children's books have been translated into many languages. In 1980 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Prize . In German, his books appeared in very widespread and high print runs in the series: The small trumpet books and the compass library of the GDR.

Works

  • The children's book Adam and Otka is about the eight-year-old siblings who visited their aunt in Prague and got to know the world of the tram conductor.
  • The novel Goblet and Sword is a historical novel set at the time of the Hussite movement . He shows the first lintel in Prague and how the Hussite masses in Prague forcibly subject churches and monasteries to communion.
  • The novel Doctor Meluzin: The circumstances of his life and the separation from his wife bring fifty-three-year-old Dr. Meluzin to give up his position as chief physician of a Prague hospital. He goes to the country to practice in an ambulance. He soon realizes that he does not feel at home in the village and is just fleeing from himself and his empty inner world. He is tormented by the failure of his marriage and, by giving up his position in Prague, now also by failure in his job. Soon the reservations about country life fall and he begins to accept the situation and make the best of the new beginning. The title of the Czech original is: "Doctor Meluzin".
