The Bok Tower Gardens denote a carillon tower (the Bok Tower) and the surrounding property (the gardens) in Lake Wales in Florida in the United States . The Pinewood Estate (formerly: El Retiro ) has also been part of the complex since 1970 .
The millionaire, editor of the Ladies' Home Journal and philanthropist Edward W. Bok spent the winter months in Florida and wanted to create a place of pilgrimage for bird lovers. He hired the respected landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to build the building.
The construction of the facility began in 1921 in the area of Iron Mountain , the highest point in Florida. The Bok Tower Gardens are now a popular destination, with a museum and various cultural events. On August 21, 1972, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Since April 19, 1993, the garden has been a Historic District and has the status of a National Historic Landmark .
