The bokmakierie ( Telophorus zeylonus ) belongs to the family of bushshrike , making it a songbird . His home is in South Africa and Namibia , but he can also be found in eastern Zimbabwe and western Mozambique .
The Bokmakiri prefers the Karoo bushland as well as the fynbos , parks and gardens in built-up areas. He builds his nest in a hedge or in a fork of branches. As a rule, the female lays 3 red-brown or purple-green-blue spotted eggs; however, up to 6 eggs are possible. Both parents incubate for about 16 days. It takes another 18 days for the chicks to fledge.
A fully grown bokmakiri is 22 to 23 centimeters tall. The top is olive green. Its tail has a bright yellow tip. The gray head is adorned with a yellow superciliar stripe . The strong beak has a curved strong lower jaw. The underside of the bird is light yellow. There is a wide black collar between the neck and chest. Its legs and feet are blue-gray. Both sexes are similar in appearance. The young birds, on the other hand, are characterized by a dull gray-green. Furthermore, they lack the black collar.
There are four subspecies in total.
The singing of the Bokmakiris is characterized by a series of loud whistles, which are often sung in a duet. The typical singing gave the bird its name "bok – bok – mak – kik" . This chant was part of the identification of the former radio station Radio RSA .
In contrast to the stranglers, the bokmakiri is rather shy. It feeds on insects, small lizards, snakes, small birds and frogs.
