Bolitoglossa chinanteca is a species of amphibian belonging to the order of the caudata. It is known from a relatively small area in the Mexican province of Oaxaca .
description
Bolitoglossa chinanteca , with a head-trunk length of up to 3.7 cm for adult salamanders, is one of the smaller species of the mushroom-tongue salamander ( Bolitoglossa ). The tail length is around 80 percent of the head-trunk length. The back color is orange-brown with small brown spots. The throat is pale yellow. The belly and underside of the legs are pale brown with light, cream-colored mottles.
Bolitoglossa chinanteca differs from all other Neotropical salamanders in the absence of a fold under the tongue. The feet are like fins and have pronounced fully webbed . There are teeth on the jaw.
Occurrence
The species is so far only known from two areas in Mexico. These are the Sierra de Juárez between the settlement Vista Hermosa at an altitude of about 1500 meters and the Valle Nacional near Highway 175 and the Sierra Mixe near Santiago Zacatepec . The two areas are approximately 70 km apart. Probably the actual distribution area is larger and the two known partial areas are connected. They would then cover an area of around 255 square kilometers.
Way of life
The species probably lives on trees. In the disturbed habitat , e.g. The salamander was found on banana trees and other vegetation, for example on roadsides or in plantations . This suggests that it can also adapt to the human-influenced areas. So far, however , Bolitoglossa chinanteca has only been found in the vicinity of the autochthonous forests in which the species originally occurs. Like the other representatives of the mushroom-tongue salamander, it catches insects with its long sling tongue.
Systematics
Bolitoglossa chinanteca was 2012 Sean M. Rovito , Gabriela Parra-Olea , Dana Lee and David B. Wake firstdescribed . The species is placed within the genus Bolitoglossa in the subgenus Nanotriton . The species is named after the Chinanteco people who live in Santiago Comaltepec and San Pedro Yolox , where most of the animals were found.
