Bolshoi Begitschew ( Russian Большой Бегичев , dt. "Great Begitschew") is a 1,763.7 km² large and uninhabited island of the Laptev Sea north of the Asian mainland belonging to Siberia or Russia . It belongs administratively to the Nationalrajon Anabarski of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and is named after the Russian polar explorer Nikifor Begitschew (1874-1927).
Geographical location
Bolshoi Begichev is located east of the Taimyr Peninsula at the transition from the Chatanga Gulf to the Laptev Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean , with the Anabar Gulf to the southeast of the island . The island is located between two straits that connect the Chatanga Gulf with the Laptev Sea: the northern one is the Severny Strait , which leads northeast past the Preobrashenie Island into the Laptev Sea, and the southern is the Vostochny Strait , which also leads to the Laptewsee with the Anabargolf passes over. The small and uninhabited neighboring island of Maly Begitschew is located at the western beginning of both straits about 7 km west of the west coast of the island in Chatangagolf .
The island is about 50 km long and up to 40 km wide; its coastline is 194.5 km long. Your flat land in the west is characterized by tundra interspersed with many small lakes and ponds ; the rest of the island is hilly and reaches a maximum height of 198 m .
