history

The city emerged from a mission base that developed when the hermit Francisco de Mendonça Mar settled in one of the numerous grottos on the Rio São Francisco in 1691. Within a few decades, Bom Jesus da Lapa became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Brazil.

Bom Jesus da Lapa has been the seat of the Bom Jesus da Lapa diocese since 1962 .

economy

Accommodation for pilgrims is still the most important industry today. In second and third place are fisheries and trade. Thanks to the Ponte Gercino Coelho , one of the few bridges over the Rio São Francisco, the city is a hub and market place.
