Paulo Afonso , officially Portuguese Município de Paulo Afonso , is a city in the north of the Brazilian state of Bahia . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 117,782 inhabitants, who live in a community area of around 1545.2 km² and are called Paulo-Afonsinos. The calculated population density is 67 people per km², but over 86% are concentrated in the urban core. It ranks 15th out of the state's 417 municipalities. The distance to the capital Salvador de Bahia is 434 km.
history
The sertanista and land explorer Paulo Viveiros Afonso laid the foundation stone in 1725. The place, which was under the larger municipality of Glória , received self-government rights as a municipality on July 28, 1958. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Paulo Afonso .
Here you will find the Paulo Afonso Falls , a waterfall, the Paulo Afonso hydropower complex , a system of three dams and five hydropower plants on the Rio São Francisco , which is used to generate electricity. In economic terms, the municipality was in 19th place of the municipalities in Bahia in 2016 and 378th of the 5570 municipalities in Brazil.

Surrounding municipalities are the municipalities of Santa Brígida , Rodelas , Glória and Jeremoabo in Bahia , the municipality Delmiro Gouveia in Alagoas and Sergipe Canindé de São Francisco .

Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , the former Federal MP for Bahia Luiz de Deus of the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) was elected city prefect for the period from 2017 to 2020. He had been elected mayor in 1988.
The legislature rests with a 15-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.
