In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning it was with God. Everything came into being through the word and without the word nothing came into being. In him was life and life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not grasped it. A man appeared who was sent by God; his name was Johannes. He came as a witness to testify of the light that all might come to believe through him. He was not the light himself, he was only supposed to bear witness to the light.
