Bonifacio Bembo
Bonifacio Bembo (* around 1420 in Brescia ; † around 1480 ) is a northern Italian painter of the early Renaissance in the 15th century. He is known for portraits at the court of the Dukes of Milan .
Life
He can be traced back between 1447 and 1477 and was born in Brescia . His father Giovanni was a painter, as were his brothers Benedetto and Andrea and his nephew Giovanni Francesco Bembo. The date of his death is uncertain.
He was court painter to the Sforzas in Milan. The portraits of the Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza and his wife Bianca Maria Visconti from 1462 have survived from him ( Pinacoteca di Brera ). He also painted the frescoes in the Church of Sant'Agostino in Cremona . He also decorated the ducal chapel in the palace of the dukes in Milan and in the palace of Pavia (with Vincenzo Foppa and Zanetto Bugatto ).
Bembo is still connected to the Gothic style, but uses influences from the early Renaissance .
He is also assigned a set of tarot cards (called Visconti-Sforza cards). He is said to owe their Neoplatonic symbolism to his acquaintance with Georgios Gemistos Plethon .
He also made 268 book illustrations on Lancelot vom See ( National Library in Florence ).
