The Bore Valley is a 1.1 km long valley with north-south orientation near the north coast of South Georgia . On the west bank of Cumberland Bay, it stretches from Lewis Pass to Grytviken at the head of King Edward Cove .
A team led by archaeologist, paleontologist and geologist Johan Gunnar Andersson surveyed the valley during the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903). Andersson discovered that the valley was completely filled with ice in earlier times, which led to the name as Bores Dal ( Swedish for Valley of Boreas ). In the meantime, the English language form of this designation has established itself. Originally, the Maidalen north of Lewis Pass was mistakenly mistaken for part of the Bore Valley.
