Borgerforeningen
The Borgerforeningen was founded in Flensburg in the 19th century under the German name "Bürgerverein" . Today the Borgerforeningen is known for its restaurant in downtown Flensburg and the courtyard of the same name. The association sees itself as an open Danish association.
history
On May 12, 1835, the Borgerforeningen was founded under the name "Bürgererverein" as a social association. In 1844 the citizens' association acquired the property at Holm 17 and built the transverse building that still exists today, which also includes a ballroom. The initially Schleswig-Holstein and liberal association turned to the Danish side in the course of the nationality dispute. As a result, the name was also changed to Borgerforeningen . In the years 1846 and 1847 the association hosted the Danish King Christian VIII . From 1857, King Frederick VII of Denmark regularly attended the club festivals. At that time, the association also organized the inauguration ceremony of the Idstedt lion on July 25, 1862 in the old cemetery , at which the king did not appear.
Since April 1864, the building of the Bürgererverein and the Ständehaus, not far away, served as military hospitals (see German-Danish War ), in which Aachen Franciscan Sisters were involved with the support of the Order of Malta , making the Malteser's first hospital , Flensburg's St. Franziskus Hospital originated.
At the end of the Second World War , the Borgerforeningen restaurant became a contact point for refugees. His tenant Hanni Matthiesen participated in the resistance in Flensburg from 1944, which cooperated with the Danish resistance and helped refugees and deserters across the border. The Danish resistance was also given weapons that were stolen from bars by police officers and members of the Navy. The tenant then temporarily hid the weapons in the bowling alley of Borgerforeningen. After that, the weapons were smuggled across the border, for example in a stroller or in a double bottom of a midwife's pocket and later also by hauliers. Matthiesen also smuggled explosives in his prosthetic leg , which he wore after a war wound, across the border. Sabotage was carried out with the explosives. Matthiesen had contact with forced laborers and prisoners of war in Flensburg who tried to hinder war production at the Flensburg shipyard .
The ballroom is the last remaining large hall of an old Flensburg association and offers 180 seats at a table or 250 standing places for a reception. Nowadays the restaurant's hall serves nationally independent gatherings. The Borgerforeningen has opened up to a broader target group.
Borgerforeningen farm
The yard in front of the headquarters of the association now bears the name of the Borgerforeningen. Its original name was Norweger Hof . The courtyard, now one of the city's busiest merchants' courtyards, can be reached via the Holm . It also takes you to the Flensburg ZOB , so the route is often a shortcut. Both the Borgerforeningen and the other old buildings of the courtyard are registered as cultural monuments of the Flensburg city center . In the front area towards the Holm is the Tort-Jepsen-Haus , which can only be seen from the side of the courtyard. On the side there is a crepe stand in an attached booth . There are also other shops in the courtyard.
Anecdote from Friedrich the Seventh's overnight stay in the Borgerforeningen
The following anecdote has come down to us from the time when King Friedrich VII regularly visited the Borgerforeningen: During the night after the previous meeting, Frederick VII and Countess Danner stayed at the Borgerforeningen. But the fragile bed had to give way under the two heavy people and finally collapsed. The next morning they asked the king how the countess had fared. Friedrich VII replied: "She slept like an angel!"
