Surra

Surra is a parasitosis in mammals caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma evansi is caused. Horses , camels , dogs and Asian elephants are considered to be particularly susceptible, while cattle show only minor signs of disease and serve as reservoirs for pathogens . The vectors are horseflies and vampire bats . The disease is common in the Arabian Peninsula , South Asia , North Africa, and Central and South America .

Clinically, the disease manifests itself in fever , weakness, weight loss with preserved appetite, petechiae around the body orifices, hives , anemia and jaundice, and edema of the legs, chest and abdomen. In horses and dogs in particular, deaths can occur without treatment.

Antiprotozoic drugs such as Suramin or Diminazen are used for treatment .
