Boris Babochkin ( Russian Борис Андреевич Бабочкин ; born January 5 . Jul / 18th January  1904 greg. In Saratov , †  21st July 1975 in Moscow ) was a Soviet actor .

Life

Babotschkin was born in Saratov, the son of a businessman and a teacher. He became interested in the theater at an early age and attended an acting school in Saratov in 1920, which he left a short time later. He moved to Moscow, studied for a few months at the drama school of Michael Chekhov and from 1921 at the school of Illarion Pewzow . This was followed by appearances at theaters in Moscow and at provincial theaters in Saratov and Samarqand, among others . In 1927 he became a member of the ensemble at the Leningrad Theater of Satire, and from 1931 to 1935 he played at the Leningrad Academic Drama Theater. From 1935 to 1940 Babotschkin worked as a director, actor and, in later years, artistic director of the Leningrad Gorky Theater (from 1992 State Academic Bolshoi Theater). In the 1952/53 season Babotschkin was chief director at the Pushkin Theater in Moscow and from 1955 until his death in 1975 he was part of the ensemble of the Moscow Maly Theater .

In 1928, Babotschkin came to film and made his screen debut in Мятеж. He experienced his international breakthrough in 1934 as the title character of the film Chapayev . In his later years he mainly shot for television, where he was seen several times in Chekhov films. Babotschkin died in Moscow in 1975 and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
