Boris Andreevich Uspensky

Boris Andreevich Uspenski ( Russian Борис Андреевич Успенский , scientific transliteration Boris Andreevič Uspenskij ; born March 1, 1937 in Moscow ) is, together with Juri Lotman , the most important representative of Russian semiotics .

He taught at the Lomonossow University in Moscow , held visiting professorships in Austria and the USA and is a professor emeritus in Naples . Uspenski is the author of 400 papers on theoretical linguistics , the history of the Church Slavonic and Russian languages, cultural studies and art and history semiotics .

Since 1987 he has been an external member of the Austrian and since 1999 of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . In 1990 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . He is a multiple honorary doctor.

The mathematician Vladimir Uspensky was Boris Uspenski's older brother.
