Borkener Seenland
The Borkener Seenland near Borken in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district consists of a number of artificially created lakes and ponds that were created during the recultivation of the opencast mines in the Borken lignite area and are partly still in the making. The lake landscape offers important resting and resting areas for migratory birds in the West Hessian Basin .
The most important lakes in the Borken Lake District are:
- Borkener See - 139 ha, embedded in a nature reserve with a total area of 350 ha
- Stockelache - 10 ha, used as a swimming lake
- Singliser See - 74 ha, used for tourism, mainly for water sports ( windsurfing )
- Gombether See - 80 ha (planned in the final stage), currently (2017) still in development
The Singliser and the Gombether See are directly adjacent to each other. The city administration of Borken is thinking about connecting these two lakes with each other and thus creating a coherent water surface of over 150 hectares.
