The Borodino wren ( Troglodytes troglodytes orii ) is a controversial subspecies of the wren . It is only known from the holotype , a male, which was collected in January 1938 on Minami-daitō , the main island of the Daitō Islands (formerly known as Borodino Islands) east of Okinawa and is now in the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology (Collection No. 25476). The Japanese ornithologist Yoshimaro Yamashina described this bird as a new subspecies after comparing it to 114 specimens of other wren taxa from the surrounding areas. With the specific epithet, Yamashina honored the bird collector Hyojiri Orii, who discovered this bird.

The Borodino wren reached a size of nine to eleven centimeters. He was a bush dweller who fed on insects.

Recently, however, there have been increasing observations of wrens in Yonaguni and Okinawa . Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the Daitō bird is only a stray migratory bird of the subspecies of Honshū ( T. t. Fumigatus ), Yakushima / Tanegashima ( T. t. Ogawae ) or Izu ( T. t. Mosukei ) ( Vaurie, 1955 ), especially since it looks very similar to the subspecies of Izu.

Undoubtedly, however, many bird populations on the islands south of Japan were wiped out in the late 1930s, their habitat being destroyed by civil and military settlements.
