Bortschali ( Georgian ბორჩალო / Bortschalo , Azerbaijani Borçalı ) is a historic landscape in southeastern Georgia . Until 1947 it was also the name of the city of Marneuli . The name comes from the Azerbaijani language .

The Bortschali landscape lies in the eastern part of the Georgian administrative region of Lower Cartlia in the area of ​​the Marneuli , Gardabani and Bolnissi Rajons . It borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia . Until 1736 it belonged to the Sultanate of Bortschali. It formed a Ujesd within the Tbilisi Governorate .

The city of Bortschali was renamed Marneuli in 1947 . The name Marneuli comes from the Georgian language .

Both in the city and in the region, the Azerbaijanis make up the largest population group, followed by Georgians , Armenians , Greeks and Russians .
