Borys Halpert

Borys Halpert (* 1805 in Warsaw ; † February 7, 1861 ibid) was a Polish theater director, librettist and musician.

The son of a Jewish banker studied law in Warsaw. As a young man, he participated in the November Uprising . From 1834 to 1836 he was a member of the management and from 1849 to 1851 director of the Warsaw Theater Administration ( Warszawskie Teatry Rządowe ). From 1852 to 1861 he was the head of the Warsaw Government Chancellery.

In his role as theater director Halpert promoted the works of young Polish authors in particular and brought the plays of the then largely unknown Aleksander Fredro to the stage, he also translated plays and the like. a. by Carlo Goldoni and Eugène Scribe . He was also active as a choir singer and violinist in the theater orchestra and also emerged as a librettist (including Piorun , Singspiel by Józef Stefani ). He was married twice: in the first marriage with the actress Józefina Chojnacka and in the second marriage with the actress Eleonora Leontyna Żuczkowska .
