Bosanski ćilim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bosanski ćilim is a Bosnian variant of the kilim , often with an oriental appearance, which is culturally of great importance for Bosniaks as well as for the other ethnic groups of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only European country that maintains its own hand-made kilim as part of traditional art.

Appearance

The simplest Bosnian kilims have a red background adorned with various patterns. However, a blue background for the carpet is also common.

Bosnian kilims are adorned with the beauty of the fine ornamentation and the variety of colors. The Bosanski ćilim combines impressions of the Orient and autochthonous elements of the Balkans .

The best-known kilim of this type is the so-called Begovski ćilim, which was woven for months. When it was carried outside and held against the sun, no light was allowed to shine through. This confirmed the density and thus the corresponding quality.

The wool from domestic sheep, which was mainly dyed with vegetable matter , was used to make the kilims . Straight lines , zigzag lines, triangles , rhombuses and patterns from flora and fauna were used for decoration .

Influence in culture

The Bosnian kilim plays an important role in the Bosniak and Bosnian culture. In the past, women made these carpets themselves and they were often given as gifts. The floors of almost all Bosniak houses were decorated with these kilims.

In the village of Vlakovo in the Ilidža municipality , a weaving mill for exclusively Bosnian kilims was opened, which wants to maintain and maintain this carpet as a Bosnian-Herzegovinian brand.
