history

The automobile boom at the beginning of the 1920s had other effects besides the gradually increasing traffic chaos. The majority of motorists had little idea how to install or replace the automotive accessories in their cars. Robert Bosch found this gap in the market in 1921 with the establishment of customer service - the Bosch service and the opening of the first "Robert Bosch AG installation and repair workshop" in the Hamburg car dealership, Max Eisenmann & Co. The name "Bosch -Dienst ”and its own trademark , the“ Bosch Service Lantern ”, were registered five years later. The first Bosch services initially had the task of retrofitting and maintaining Bosch products such as magneto ignition , starter or batteries in the vehicles. At that time, there were 20 Bosch services in Germany, which had been set up at the most important traffic hubs, as stated in an internal Bosch report from 1926.

Further service stations at home and abroad followed. When the first directory was published in 1930 that recorded all workshops worldwide, the organization had grown to 2,750 Bosch services in 78 countries. As a result, the Bosch name quickly spread across the world, which also made it possible to establish and expand agencies and sales outlets abroad. In the years after the Second World War, the number of Bosch services increased continuously, so that by 1962 there were already 3,800 of these facilities worldwide. With the establishment of the Bosch service "Peter Müller & Sons" in Halle, the Bosch service organization finally reached the 10,000 mark in 1992. Today more than 16,000 Bosch service partner companies are active as multi-brand workshops worldwide.

Over the years, the range of repair services for electrical and mechanical components from Bosch Services has been expanded. With the market launch of the world's first anti-lock braking system (ABS) suitable for series production in 1978, maintenance and repair of safety and later also comfort systems were added. With the arrival of the first electronic components in vehicles, precise diagnosis with the appropriate testing technology also became an important part of daily work in the Bosch services. Since the 1990s, the testing and diagnosis of electronic systems has been added. Today, the well-trained technicians are also proficient in the most modern vehicles, which are equipped with high-voltage systems.

An additional specialization in the implementation of vehicle repairs resulted from the increase in registrations of diesel-powered vehicles in Europe. With the invention of the injection pump for diesel engines in 1927 and today as one of the world's largest manufacturers of diesel systems and components, Bosch has played a major role in the success of diesel drives since the beginning of the 20th century. The founding of workshops that specialized in the repair and maintenance of diesel systems was a consequence. That is why the Bosch Service workshop concept is supplemented by Bosch Diesel Center and Bosch Diesel Services. Today, mainly new generation diesel injection systems such as common rail systems and their individual components are repaired here.
