The Oldenburg Botanical Garden is a 3.7  hectare facility of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg . The publicly accessible part of the garden located on a ridge of the Oldenburg hair Esch district and is within Philosophenweg and from Schützenweg made accessible. The Oldenburg Botanical Garden dates back to 1882, when a teaching garden was created for the Oldenburg teachers' college. In 1933 the state of Oldenburg was responsible for the garden, in 1950 the state of Lower Saxony. In 1976 the garden was incorporated into the University of Oldenburg.

The botanical garden is also designed according to aesthetic aspects. The aesthetics is not an end in itself, however, but the characteristics and benefits of the diversity of even less spectacular plants and their vegetation communities should be made clear to students, pupils and the general public. It is a particular concern of the university to demonstrate and research the fundamental importance of evolutionary theory for all life processes. For this purpose, among other things, current research projects of the university are presented, plants are made available for research and teaching at the university and there are many tours and other events around the world of plants. The botanical garden also houses a “green school”. In this extracurricular learning location, school classes and other groups learn to observe closely, microscopically and experiment.

Küpkersweg location

In addition to the publicly accessible Philosophenweg location, there is also the non-public Küpkersweg location. It was put into operation in 1984 and offers an area of ​​approx. 1.5 hectares. Plants are raised and cultivated here that are to be used for research and teaching, but also later for the public part of the Botanical Garden on Philosophenweg.
