It belongs to the department of biology / chemistry and was opened in 1984. The main tasks of the garden are research, teaching and public relations.

description

The area of the botanical garden covers 5.6 hectares, on which about 8000 plant species can be seen. The garden is divided into geographical areas such as the Mediterranean, Euro-Asian steppe, China, Japan and North America; in the center is an elevation (a remnant of the first quarry), where the high mountain plants of the European mountains are shown in an alpinum . The entire area is enriched by a waterfall (11 m), smaller streams and ponds. A rainforest house was opened in 1998 and shows over 800 tropical plants from Central and South America on 600 square meters and a height of 21 meters.

The garden was expanded in April 2011 to include a 2.8 hectare second natural quarry; In this quarry there are dry grass communities that are under nature protection . The two quarries are connected by a tunnel.

research

The main research focus is on biodiversity and the evolution of land plants . A specialty is the phylogeny of the genus Allium (leek family), the associated collection includes 230 species. Various departments of the department, especially botany and ecology, regularly carry out field tests in the garden. The Osnabrück Botanical Garden is home to the Loki Schmidt - Genebank for Wild Plants, founded in 2003 , and coordinates the WEL Genebank (Wild Plants Genebank for Food and Agriculture), which is in cooperation with the Botanical Gardens in Berlin-Dahlem , Regensburg and Karlsruhe and the University of Education Karlsruhe is under construction.

Teaching

The collections of the botanical garden are used intensively in the teaching of biology. Many final theses (diploma, bachelor, master and doctoral theses) are also created in collaboration with the garden.

public relation

The garden is open to the public free of charge and around 70,000 people visit it every year. There are regular guided tours (Sunday walks) on selected topics. The offer of the Green School is aimed at the interested public, especially children and schoolchildren. In 2010 almost 400 group tours took place. With the construction of the approx. 900 m² Bohnenkamp house, the offer was expanded to include experimental and group rooms. The garden and its public relations work is strongly supported by the Friends of the Botanical Garden, which has around 300 members.
