Today the botanical garden is considered the green oasis in the middle of the city of Karlsruhe. It is open to visitors. It is one of the state's own monuments and is looked after by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg . You can find out more about the history of the Botanical Garden in an exhibition in the archway building.

history

The origins of the Botanical Garden go back to Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach (1679–1738). Between the two side wings of the palace, he had a “princely pleasure garden” laid out with magnificent orangeries , gardens with flower and glass houses, aviaries and grottos. Around 1800 Margrave Karl Friedrich had the pleasure garden in front of the castle and the castle park converted in the English style. This also made the decision to create a new botanical garden to the west of the palace, at the current location. According to plans by Friedrich Weinbrenner , the Grand Duke realized a sizable garden with an orangery, warm, cold and nursery houses as well as a corresponding outdoor area from 1808. However, the buildings were made of wood and were damaged after a short time. Grand Duke Friedrich I (1826–1907) therefore arranged for all the plant houses to be rebuilt in the 1850s according to the designs of the building director Heinrich Hübsch . These buildings, some of which have an imposing iron structure, have largely been preserved today. They contain plants that inspire plant lovers partly because of their rarity, partly because of their growth, splendor of colors or their age. Some rare trees from the 19th century can also be seen outdoors, which mix with new plantings to form an attractive ensemble.
