history

former botanical garden in Gökerstrasse

The old garden on Gökerstraße was created on the initiative of the school principal Georg Harms on the site of the former Grodenschule, which was destroyed in the Second World War. On the basis of his suggestions, the city council approved a school garden in the Wilhelmshaven district of Heppens ( Lage ) in 1947 , which was later converted into a botanical garden.

With an area of 8,500 m², the garden was the smallest botanical garden in Germany. The most important plant communities in north-west Germany were presented in the plant- sociological garden . It comprised 2500 mostly native plant species. In 1972 the garden was given a 230 m² tropical house with the subdivision of a temperature-controlled house and a warm house. Here a selection of plants from the warmer regions of the world (Mediterranean, tropics and subtropics) was shown. 1980 was a cold house with water lilies pool and succulent collection. In August 2014, the tropical house had to be demolished because it was dilapidated. In 2015 the location on Gökerstraße was given up.

The new location in the city park at Neuengrodener Weg 26 was opened on June 9, 2017. It has an area of 6000 m² and is open all year round.
