The Botanical Garden of the Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuanian: Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto Botanikos sodas ) - University Botanical Garden , is located in Kaunas , Lithuania . The garden is a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and has the code KAUN .

history

First head - Constantin von Regel

The Kaunas Botanical Garden was established in 1923 at the Mathematics and Nature Faculty of the University of Lithuania (since 1930 it has been Vytautas Magnus University) as the Lithuanian Botanical Center. For him, the floor area of ​​70 hectares in the Hoher Freda (Kaunas residential area) was selected, together with the manor park of the former landowner Jozef Godlevski, as well as ponds and part of the defenses of the Kaunas fortress.

The first head-director of the garden was Constantin von Regel from Dorpat University (Estonia). With the help of the other botanical gardens, especially Berlin , Königsberg and Sankt Peterburg, the garden grew quickly and well. In 1926 the collections of the Botanical Garden were enriched with 4650 plant species. These numbers follow later; 1932 - 5987, 1934 - 7180, 1936 - 7200. In 1925 two greenhouses were built. They were planted with tropical plants, including giant Amazon giant water lily and Indian lotus flower . In 1937 a 12.2 m high winter garden with a pool of water plants was built.

Todays situation

The area of ​​the garden is approximately 62.5 hectares and is home to 14,700 plant species, varieties and forms. The botanical garden is rich in plant exhibitions: annual and perennial flowers, medicinal plants, silver shrubs and conifers, hydrangeas, petunias and energy plants . The collections of roses, dahlias, tulips, other bulbous plants and peonies as well as a systematic presentation of the flora have been renewed. There is also the brand new exhibition of phytoremediation plants and an educational garden.
