Botryobasidium baicalinum is a mushroom species from the family of grape basidia relatives (Botryobasidiaceae). It forms resupinate, cobweb-like fruit bodies thatgrowon dead wood of pines . The known distribution area of Botryobasidium baicalinum includes Lake Baikal . The anamorphic of the species is not yet known.
features
Macroscopic features
Botryobasidium baicalinum initially has white, later cream-colored, spinel-like and thin fruiting bodies that grow resupinate (i.e. completely adjacent) on their substrate and appear slightly reticulated under the magnifying glass.
Microscopic features
As with all grape basidia , the hyphae structure of Botryobasidium baicalinum is monomitic, i.e. it consists exclusively of generative hyphae that branch out at right angles. The basal hyphae are hyaline , usually 7–9 µm wide, thick-walled and not encrusted. The 5–7 µm thick subhymenial hyphae are hyaline and thin-walled. Unlike almost all grape basidia, the species has cystids 100–200 × 3–7 µm in size and buckles on all septa. The six-pore basidia of the species grow in nests, are 9.5–11 × 6–7 µm in size, are short-cylindrical and buckled at the base. The spores are subnavicular to boat-shaped and mostly 6.6–8 × 2.7–3.4 µm in size. They are hyaline, smooth, and thin-walled.
distribution
The known distribution of Botryobasidium baicalinum only includes the type locality , the south of the Russian Lake Baikal .
ecology
Botryobasidium baicalinum is a saprobiont that grows on the dead wood of pine trees ( Pinus spp.). It sometimes grows together with Hyphodontia pallidula .
