Botteram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Botteram is a margarines - brand .

Margarine was also sold under the brand name Botterram . It is currently not clear whether another producer is behind this. Historically, this name was written on the packaging with a thin line above the "m". If this is interpreted as a double line , the alternative spelling is botterram .

history

In 1871 the pharmacist Benedikt Klein founded the Benedikt Klein Margarinewerke in Nippes near Cologne, where margarine was produced under the brand names Overstolz and Botteram . Initially, production began in Vogteistraße in 1888 until the plant moved to Cologne-Ehrenfeld in 1899 . In the 1960s, up to 16 tons of margarine was produced per hour.

At the end of the 1970s, increasing competition and the associated pressure on prices led company boss Robert Klein to sell the company to the Dutch-British consumer goods group Unilever in 1980 . Production in Cologne remained independent until 1987. Then this was relocated to Kleve and incorporated into the Unilever subsidiary Union Deutsche Lebensmittelwerke . At the end of the 1990s, the remaining employees moved from Cologne to Hilden , before the company was completely absorbed by the Union in 2001.

In July 2015, the Botteram brand was deleted at the request of Unilever.

In December 2017, Unilever launched a 250g rapeseed oil butter pack under the name Botterram .

In 2018, Unilever sold its spreads division to the financial investor KKR , who continued to run it under the name Upfield Holding .

In October 2019, Botterram rapeseed oil butter was noticed in a test by Stiftung Warentest due to a high content of 3-MCPD ester (but within the limit value). It was also revealed that the product contained more palm oil than butter and milk fat combined, according to a test .

Trivia

The name Botteram is probably derived from the Cologne word botteramm for bread and butter.

In the 1960s, the Cologne folk actor Willy Millowitsch advertised Botteram on television.
