Bougatsa ( Greek μπουγάτσα , other spellings: Bugatsa, Bugaza; Turkish poğaça ) is a Greek pastry made from puff pastry , which is particularly common in northern Greece around Thessaloniki .

The bougatsa can be prepared as a dessert with cream or semolina pudding as well as hearty with cheese , minced meat or spinach filling. The filling is applied between the layers of puff pastry, which is then baked in the oven. Before serving, bougatsa is often cut into smaller pieces and, depending on the flavor, sprinkled with powdered sugar and / or cinnamon . Bougatsa with cheese filling has a similar taste to another Greek puff pastry, the tyropita , and is therefore often confused with it.
