The Bourlon-Genette ( Genetta bourloni ) is a species of predator from the family of crawling cats (genus genus cats ). The distribution area of the Bourlon-Genette is limited to the West African rainforest areas in Sierra Leone , Liberia , Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire .

features

The Bourlon-Genette reaches a head-torso length of 49.5 centimeters, the tail length is 41 centimeters and the weight is 1.5 to 2 kilograms. The fur is short and rough. The species corresponds in its appearance to the Pardelgenette Genetta pardina , but has a grayer basic color with very dark spots. These are elongated and partially merge with one another. The neck stripes are clearly defined, the dark line along the spine is broad and begins directly behind the shoulders. The tail has five to seven light rings and is dark on at least half. The front and rear legs are dark and clearly spotted. The upper area of the front feet is spotted, the hind feet are not stained. The face is also clearly drawn. It has a well-developed, dark mask and a dark line in the area of the snout and white spots below and above the eyes.

distribution and habitat

Distribution area of the Bourlon-Genette

The distribution area of the Bourlon-Genette is limited to the West African rainforest areas in Sierra Leone , Liberia , Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Way of life

There is no information about the way of life of the species, the species is scientifically only described and known on the basis of specimens from museum collections. Like other species of the genus, it likely feeds primarily predatory.

Systematics

The Bourlon-Genette was described by Philippe Gaubert in 2003 as an independent species and assigned to the genet cats ( Genetta ), which currently consist of 14 species. Originally the Bourlon-Genette was assigned to the Pardelgenette ( Genetta pardina ).

Threat and protection

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) classifies the species as a type of warning list (Near threatened). She justifies this with the limited distribution area in the rainforests in outer West Africa and the assumption that stocks have declined by more than 20% in the last three generations. There are no specific data on the population, the species has only been scientifically described and known using specimens from museum collections.

The main threat to this species comes from the progressive decline in forests and thus the usable habitats for this species. While this happens only to a small extent in Liberia with around 0.2% forest loss between 1984 and 2000, the decline in Côte d'Ivoire is assumed to be 20% over 14 years. The animals are hunted regionally as "bushmeat" and the gorse cat skins are traded.
