It was a continuation of the successful collaboration between director Wilhelm Semmelroth, screenwriter Herbert Asmodi and composer Hans Jönsson, who had begun to adapt early crime fiction classics for television in the early 1970s. All indoor shots were shot directly using video technology , the outdoor shots using conventional film technology. In 2010 the film was re-released on DVD.

action

In 1871 the castle of the Count of Claudieuse burned at night in the village of Sauveterre near Paris, who was seriously injured during the fire by two shots fired at him by an unknown person. On the very night of the crime, the chief examining magistrate, Galpin, interrogated the count and his wife. Through the testimony of Cocoleu, who is classified as insane, who is encouraged by the Countess and who has brought the couple's children to safety, the neighbor, Jacques von Beaucoran, is suspected of having been an arsonist and a shooter. The suspicion is confirmed by further witnesses and evidence found during the search of his room. Since Jacques von Beaucoran refuses to give statements in his defense, he is arrested. His mother, his fiancée Denise von Chandoré, their grandfather and the lawyer Folgat try in vain to find evidence of his innocence. Jacques von Beaucoran insists on only taking his former lawyer, Maître Magloire, into his trust. He tells him the story of his love affair with the Countess of Claudieuse. It becomes clear that the countess was forced into marriage to her husband. The portrayal sounds extremely implausible to Magloire, especially because of the countess's impeccable reputation, and he refuses to take on the defense. Thereupon Jacques von Beaucoran makes a suicide attempt in prison, but it fails. Now Magloire believes the story and they hire former police officer Goudar to find evidence. Disguised as a tramp, Goudar has himself taken to the institution where Cocoleu is incarcerated. With the help of Dr. Seinebos succeeds in being placed in Cocoleu's cell. Denise von Chandoré visits her fiancé in prison, brings him money and tries to persuade him to flee. Jacques von Beaucoran accepts the money. Instead of fleeing, he bribes the prison guard, who is supposed to set him free for a few hours. Jacques visits his former lover at night in order to win her as a witness to his story. During this interview, the countess makes it clear to him that she will not leave him to anyone else. The husband, Count von Claudieuse, who is terminally ill from the shooting, overhears the couple's conversation and decides to make the statement that he recognized Jacques von Beaucoran that night. That would definitely convict the suspect. The count has the examining magistrate and the public prosecutor notified. The couple discovered the count while he was eavesdropping. In a scuffle, he falls down a flight of stairs. In this desperate situation, Jacques von Beaucoran convinced the Countess that he still loved her and wanted to flee with her. The countess believes him and hastily leaves the house. When the count realizes his wife's betrayal, he retracts his testimony on the death bed. The next day, Magloire and Goudar appear at the examining magistrate, who believes Jacques von Beaucoran has also fled. Magloire explains that he knows the whereabouts of his client and has proof of his innocence. Cocoleu, who wanted to free the countess from the prison of her marriage, is exposed as a shooter and arsonist. During the time they spent together in the cell, Goudar had succeeded in coaxing a corresponding confession from him. Coroner Galpin has to bury his ambitions for advancement and Jacques von Beaucoran will marry his fiancée.
