features

Genetta pardina is a strongly built gorse cat with a short, rough coat. This is yellowish-gray to pale or sand-gray on the upper side. The broad, dark line on the middle of the back (eel line) begins behind the shoulders and extends to the base of the tail, a "back crest" is missing. The back spots are dark brown or reddish, elongated, angular and bordered by dark rings. The spots in the two upper rows are arranged relatively evenly and about as wide as the eel line, downwards the spots become smaller and more irregular. The face wears a clearly defined dark mask between light drawing elements. The tail has 6-7 light ringlets, which alternate with significantly wider dark stripes, the tail tip is light. The head-trunk length is given as 41-55.3 cm for males and 41-53 cm for females. The tail length is 39–49 cm in males and 42–45 cm in females, the weight can be up to 3.1 kg.

Distribution and habitats

Distribution area of Genetta pardina

The range of the Pardelgenette stretches from Senegal and Mali via Gambia , Guinea , Guinea-Bissau , Sierra Leone , Liberia and the Ivory Coast to Ghana and Burkina Faso . The course of the eastern edge of the area is unclear.

Primary and secondary rainforests , gallery forests and moist savannas serve as habitats . Bush-covered areas ("bushland"), forest plantations and outskirts are also inhabited.

Way of life

The way of life is largely unknown. Iberian genes are believed to feed on rodents , invertebrates, and fruits. The animals are probably nocturnal.

Danger

Due to the relatively wide distribution and occurrence in different habitats, the IUCN classifies the Pardelgenette as harmless (“least concern”). Due to the high hunting pressure ("bushmeat") on the gorse cats living in the area, a reassessment may be necessary.
