The inhabitants of the Chaouia region trace their ancestry back to Arab origins. However, many residents of the city of Bouskoura, which has grown enormously in recent decades, are of Berber descent and mostly immigrated here from the mountain and desert regions of southern Morocco in the second half of the 20th century.
Economy and history
At the beginning of the 20th century a rural community oriented towards small farmers, Bouskoura has developed into a service-oriented city since the independence of Morocco (1956), where many people working in Casablanca live. Numerous smaller industrial, commercial and craft companies have settled in the surrounding area.
