The Boyd Strait is the more than 30 km wide strait between Snow Island in the east and Smith Island in the west in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It combines the open Southern Ocean in the north between the archipelago and the Antarctic Peninsula located Bransfield Strait in the south.
The British navigator James Weddell charted them on October 26, 1823. Weddell named them after Captain David Boyd († 1858), under whom he had served on the ship Firefly between 1810 and 1811 .
