The bridge Am Dorp partially Bridge Dorp was a road bridge over the track cut of the disused railway line Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd , popularly called "Wuppertaler Nordbahn", in the Wuppertal district Elberfeld-West . It was originally protected as a monument .

history

The road bridge at the location Am Dorp (or " Auf dem Dorp ") was built in 1876 as a brick vaulted bridge over the railway line built in 1873. At that time, the bridge provided the traffic route from the limestone mine Dorp to Otto-Hausmann-Ring. The mine ceased operations in the 1940s.

The Wuppertal-Dorp stop , at that time located directly on the bridge, was established after the war in 1954.

The bridge was closed to vehicle traffic, after which the bridge was used as a pedestrian overpass from Otto-Hausmann-Ring to Katernberger Straße or “In der Beek” street.

The bridge was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal on April 11, 1991 under the title " Road bridge at the Dorp stop " . Passenger traffic on the railway line at the stop was discontinued in September 1991. The line was then completely shut down in December 1999. In 1994 the bridge passed from Deutsche Bahn into the ownership of the city of Wuppertal.

During a routine bridge inspection in 2001, increased damage to the brick vault was found, which allowed conclusions to be drawn about a reduced load-bearing capacity. It was therefore closed to pedestrian traffic in December 2001. As a replacement crossing, the former staircase to the former stop was provisionally restored and a track crossing was created.

After a site inspection with the Rhenish Office for the Preservation of Monuments in January 2003 and an expert opinion that estimated the cost of a bridge renovation at 470,000 euros, the Lower Monument Authority decided to approve the recommendations to remove the structure from the list of monuments and to approve the demolition of the bridge. The bridge was also no longer of any use in terms of traffic engineering and with an age of more than 125 years it exceeded the theoretical useful life of 115 years for this type of structure.

After the bridge was demolished, for which costs of 90,000 euros were calculated, the replacement crossing with the staircase was retained.

Building description

The bridge was around 38.20 m long and 5.44 m wide.
