The Châtillon-sur-Loire bridge is the only bridge over the Loire in Châtillon-sur-Loire in the Loiret department in France . It connects the town to the south of the river with the agricultural areas to the north and Route nationale 7 .

location

The nearest road bridges over the Loire are the bridge of Bonny-sur-Loire, 8 kilometers upstream as the crow flies, and the bridge at Gien 13.5 kilometers downstream . The canal bridge Briare ( Pont-canal de Briare ), with which the Loire Lateral Canal crosses the Loire, is 4.5 kilometers downstream . It is passable for boats up to the Freycinet size as well as for pedestrians and cyclists.

The bridge, begun after the completion of the Loire Lateral Canal in 1838, was located at the point where the canal crossed the Loire in its own river bed. The crossing took place in a fairway formed by a dike in the river bed, which ran diagonally from the left to the right bank together with the main stream and ended a few meters below the bridge.

history

The Châtillon-sur-Loire bridge, which was built on the basis of a 47-year concession and opened in 1841, is one of the numerous suspension bridges built by Marc Seguin and his company Marc Seguin Freres in France . The bridge was badly damaged by floods in 1846 and 1856 and was restored. In 1931 it was replaced by a slightly reinforced new building. In 1940 this was destroyed, later rebuilt and opened to traffic in 1951.

description

Sketch of the Châtillon-sur-Loire bridge

The road bridge has two lanes and a walkway on both sides. It is 453 meters long, measured from anchor block to anchor block, and has a pillar spacing between the outer pylons of 353.42 meters. The division of the bridge into individual spans was determined by the channel of the Loire Lateral Canal and its dike in the river bed. The center distance from the pillar on the right bank to pillar no. 3 on the dike was 96.07 meters. For reasons of symmetry, the span on the left bank was almost the same length at 96.27 meters. The section remaining in the middle was then divided into two 80.57 meters and 80.51 meters long spans.

Therefore the bridge has five pairs of pylons in a row. The stone masonry pylons on the banks are stiffened against each other by a stone architrave based on a classical portal . The three pairs of stone pylons above the river bed are not connected to each other. They end in a head modeled on the structure of the architrave.

The four suspension cables arranged next to each other do not run across the entire bridge, but only from the top of one pylon to the next. Vertical hangers made of steel rods are attached to the suspension cables to support the bridge deck. So-called compensating ropes (Câbles d'équilibre) are also stretched between the tips of the pylons, two over the outer span and three over the middle span. The pylons on the banks are attached to the anchor blocks on the left bank with eight anchor ropes each and on the right bank with four somewhat stronger anchor ropes. The roadway girder consists of steel box girders. Rails are attached to the side of the box girders, which carry the bridge inspection walkway of the respective span.
