Arkadiko Bridges

The 2nd bridge; Arch construction.

The bridges of Arkadiko are three structures from the Mycenaean era on the road from Nafplio to Lygourio in the Peloponnese near the city of Arkadiko . They are the oldest surviving bridges in Greece and belonged to a road that connected the Mycenaean centers with the port of Palea Epidavros in the Late Helladic IIIB (around 1340 / 25–1100 BC) . The road was wide enough for chariots to drive on. This made it possible to move troops quickly. At the first bridge (counted from Nafplio) you can see clearly how wide the road was. The second bridge, an arch bridge at the Acropolis of Kazarma , is clearly visible from the road, the third (accessible from Arkadiko village) is the worst preserved. The arch construction of the bridges corresponds to the technique used in Mycenae and Tiryns .
