Lygourio ( Greek Λυγουριό ( n. Sg. ), Transkr. Also Ligourio; ancient Greek Lēssa Λῆσσα) is a trading center on the road from Nafplio to the Asclepion of Epidaurus in the Peloponnese ( Greece ). It is the seat of the municipality of Epidavros .

Attractions

At the western exit of the town is the natural history museum of Asklepieion with 4500 exhibits from all over the world. To the north of the village is the Ligourio pyramid . The biggest visitor magnet, however, is the Asklepion of Epidauros, which is about 3 km southeast of the town. Four churches are particularly interesting in terms of art history:

  • The church of Agios Ioannis Eleimonas from Central Byzantine times is dedicated to Saint John the Merciful . Numerous ancient spoils from the nearby Asklepieion are built into the wall for decoration. It is also noticeable that the builder Theophylactus of Kea immortalized himself with an inscription on the outside. The church is located in the village right on the main road.
  • Also in the middle of the village, a little off the main road, is the Panagitsa church from 1701 with very beautiful frescoes and ancient spolia.
  • A little outside the village at the pyramid of Lygourio you can find the church of Agia Marina from 1713. Built on the site of a temple of Athena, it also contains ancient material. The eight-sided tambour (architecture) is supported by four ancient columns, one of which is fluted. The frescoes and iconostasis are well preserved.
  • About 4 km northeast of Lygourio is the 11th century church of Agios Ioannis Theologos

Mycenaean Bridge at Lygourio

A few kilometers after Lygourio in the direction of Nafplio, a small valley on the right of the road is spanned by the Arkadiko bridge. Its coarse masonry and the construction of protruding stones point to a Mycenaean origin, especially since most of the streets of the Argolis were built in the Mycenaean period.
