history

In 1813 the need to build an orphanage arose in the Belgian city of Sint-Niklaas . The commission appointed for this purpose bought a house in 1826 and was able to inaugurate it in September 1827. In 1835 the idea arose in this house to also care for the mentally ill; Upon request, Bishop Lodewijk-Jozef Delebecque approved a temporary community of young men who wanted to take on this work. This group chose St. Hieronymus Ämiliani as their patron saint, who had founded orphanages in northern Italy in the 16th century . In 1839 the new congregation of episcopal law was founded in Sint-Niklaas to look after the orphanage. The first free Hieronymus Schools were established in 1841, followed by a school to support students in 1844. The first hospital for the care of mentally ill people (note: they were still called lunatics) was built in 1852, and in 1856 the first boarding school was launched. In 1857, living quarters for mentally handicapped people were built in Deinze , Poperinge , Hamme , Gent and Borgloon . A monastery was built in 1870; In the following years additional hospitals, institutes and care facilities were built.
