Brünig oscillates
The Brünigschwinget is one of the most prestigious Swiss wrestling competitions, which has been held on the Brünigpass since 1893 . It is one of the mountain wrestling festivals.

The Brünigschwinget takes place on the last Sunday in July on the Brünig Pass between the canton of Obwalden (municipality of Lungern ) and the Bernese Oberland and starts at 8 a.m. with the swing . The organizers are the Schwingerverband Ob- und Nidwalden and the Schwingersection Hasliberg . Like all wrestling festivals, it takes place in a folk setting with local people , yodelling and waving flags and many traditional costumes are worn.
In the early years, the Brünigschwinget took place on the Bärschwendi, a homestead below the cantonal road, and was called "Wachtschwinget" because during the Kappel War in 1531, the Catholic Obwalden stood guard at the canton border to prevent Reformed Bernese from entering. Later they switched to the Grandhotel Kurhaus on the Bernese side. In the war year 1916, today's Schwingplatz was built on Brünigstrasse. Since then, the Brünigschwinget has been held in this specially developed competition site, a nature arena with a view of the Sarneraatal .
There are 120 participants and over 6000 spectators every year. In January 2012 the Ob- and Nidwalden Wrestling Association and the Hasliberg wrestling section decided to expand the Brünigarena for just under 1.4 million Swiss francs. The expansion took place in 2012 and afterwards approx. 5100 seats and approx. 1000 standing places were available, whereby only the tickets for the standing places are on sale.
In 1960 there was a tragic incident in the final course of the Brünigschwinget in which Beat Thöni , after being laid on his back by Karl Meli, had to be carried off the field with paraplegia .

A mountain wrestling festival like the Brünigschwinget is something like the national league for a wrestler. A wreath (front tier) is very important, the respective winners will be reported in national media. Only the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival and the Unspunnen Festival offer higher prestige .
