Karl Meli (born June 22, 1938 in Winterthur - Veltheim ; † March 12, 2012 there ) was a Swiss wrestler . The two-time oscillator King of oscillating clubs Winterthur is equipped with multiple records, one of the most successful oscillator of modern times.

Career

Meli, who was already active as a child on TV Veltheim as a gymnastics wrestler in addition to wrestling , won his first wreath at a Swiss wrestling festival in 1956 , and by the end of his career it should be nine, which is a record. In 1960 the Brünigschwinget had a fateful incident in the final aisle where Melis competitor Beat Thöni , after being laid on his back by Meli, was left lying in sawdust with paraplegia . Meli and Thöni have been good friends since this incident, Meli never took part in the Brünigschwinget again.

At the Swiss Federal in Zug in 1961, Meli got stuck in the sawdust after winning in third gear and had to be carried off the pitch. The then missed fourth gear, Meli, as the favorite, was allowed to catch up the next morning. In the end he became king of wrestling for the first time in a final course of just 2½ minutes against Karl Oberholzer. He was able to defend this title in 1964 at the Swiss Confederation, where he won against Alois Boog in the final course. In 1966 he was also the favorite at the Swiss Wrestling Festival in Frauenfeld, but failed in the final round to Ruedi Hunsperger . That was the worst defeat of his career.

Another record of Melis are his two victories at Kilchberger Schwinget , 1967 and 1973, which no other wrestler has achieved to date. Meli finally ended his long active career at the age of 40 after four more victories in the last season at the Kilchberger Schwinget in 1978. During his career, he was denied the wreath only once at 125 wrestling festivals, because at the age of 18 he was banned from playing at the Northeast Swiss Wrestling Festival The referee had looked at sheet music and had to accept a deduction of points. With his 124 wreaths he was and with 61 wreath festival victories he is also the record holder, 46 times he won the coveted "leaves" in the national gymnastics. Karl Meli also regularly took part in wrestling festivals without giving a wreath and is the record winner at most wrestling festivals he was able to participate in.

Meli remained in the sport as technical director of the Winterthur wrestling club and through wrestling courses that were held by him. He also remained an active member of the Veltheim gymnastics club for a long time.
