Professional career
He was not drafted by any MLS team, but completed trial training at New England Revolution in preparation for the 2007 MLS season . He convinced the Revs and got a "developmental contract". This made him the first player in the MLS who came from the UNC Wilmington.

On August 8, 2010, he made his league debut for Philadelphia in the away game against FC Dallas, but was sent off in the 22nd minute for complaining. He was able to convince in the next few games and was the goalkeeper for the remaining games in the 2010 season.
On January 25, 2011, Knighton was released from Philadelphia. In April 2011 he moved to the Carolina RailHawks in the second-rate North American Soccer League .
