Brandal is a village in the western Norwegian municipality of Hareid in Fylke Møre og Romsdal . The village is located on the island of Hareidlandet on the Sulafjorden .
From 1898 to 1998, Brandal was a seal-catching center and home port for up to 47 arctic ships in Norway. Of these arctic ships, only the Aarvak from 1912 and the Polarstar from 1948 still exist today. The Aarvak is now part of the Aarvak Arctic Museum and can be viewed in its own boat shed .
On May 17, 1941, Brandal was occupied by German troops who built a fortress near Kvitneset. Russian prisoners of war were also housed in the fortress during the war.
